Science Buddies is a non-profit site that aims to empower K-12 students, parents, and teachers to quickly and easily find free project ideas and help in all areas of science from physics to food science and music to microbiology. Mainly targeted to students, the site will guide them through the selection and execution of a successful science fair project in a wide range of disciplines. Over 900 project ideas are available, and a Topic Selection Wizard helps students hone down their choices based on grade level, interest, and other factors. An Ask an Expert Forum, available only to registered users, connects students to experts who can help them by making suggestions, providing troubleshooting tips, or otherwise offering guidance. The site also includes a Parents Science Initiative, a campaign to encourage parents to take an active role in encouraging their children's interest in science. The Teachers section provides teachers with resources that help them to assign, manage, and evaluate a science project program in the classroom.
Teachers would be well advised to familiarize themselves with the resources on the site by visiting the Teachers section. It includes a variety of guides and other resources that will help to make science projects easier to assign and manage. Although many of these guides are presented in the context of conducting a science fair, teachers will find many ideas that can be adapted and used for inquiry-based class assignments.
