Launch Tool

This Flash-based interactive resource from the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago lets you try your hand at making a mummy! You get to learn about mummification when you follow Anubis, the god of embalming, as he explains the process to you.

To go through this interactive, you simply click on the "Continue" arrows and follow the directions on screen. In this virtual version of mummification, you get to do everything that an ancient embalmer would have done, from removing organs to wrapping the body. You also get to learn about some ancient Egyptian beliefs and some of the gods they believed in.

For Educators

This resource can be used to allow students to experience and learn what the embalming process was like. It would be good to use in conjunction with lessons you may do on human society, in particular any learning goals that have to do with group behavior and the cultural effects on behavior.
