Cell Defense: The Plasma Membrane App

Cell Defense: The Plasma Membrane App

Launch Tool

  • iPhone
  • iPod Touch
  • iPad

This app will help you learn how the plasma membrane works and its parts, including phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates, by challenging you to defend your cell against the evil Dr. Vial. In order to protect your cell, you need to build a functioning plasma membrane.

There are several different challenges you can do: Build a Membrane, Membrane Structure Challenge, Diffusion Challenge, Energy and Transport Challenge, and Osmosis Challenge. You have a set amount of time to complete each challenge. If you need help as you are going through a challenge, you can tap on the "?" to get a reminder of what you are supposed to accomplish in it.

In addition to the help section, you will get urgent messages as you go through the challenge that provide you with the information you need to be able to complete it. Once you read the message and indicate that you understand it, you unlock access to another feature of the cell membrane in the "Supplies Box."

For Educators

You can use this app with students to help them understand the composition of the plasma membrane and demonstrate diffusion and osmosis. You could help guide students through the app by providing them with a worksheet of guiding questions. You also can assess student learning by using the built-in score sheet.

Please be aware that even though this is a free app, there are pop-up ads that appear at the top of the screen. These can be removed by tapping on the "x" to close them.
