Introduction

You can use the rubric on this sheet to help you evaluate the students’ passive solar home models.

The following rubric is a suggestion on how to grade the projects. It is based loosely on the way an architecture student might be evaluated for such a model. Keep in mind that assessing this type of work can be highly subjective, and a four point rubric is difficult to use in such a project. You are welcome to modify it to suit your needs as you see the lesson unfolding in your specific classroom.

Correlation to Computer Design

Does not resemble the computer generated design

Loosely based on computer generated design

Looks like the computer design with doors, windows and other key elements in the appropriate places

Matches the computer design in location of key elements, scale, and landscaping.

Craftsmanship

Sloppy, disorganized

A reasonable attempt was made to be neat.

Model is clean and neat. Demonstrates the proper use of tools

Model is exemplary with very clean cuts, no stray marks, no excessive glue, etc.

Realistic and accurate

Model is missing two criteria from three.

Model is missing one criterion from three.

Model meets all the criteria but does not make jump to conveying the “big idea” of the design.

Model is done to scale, is selective about what elements are being emphasized, and conveys the “big idea” of their design.

Oral presentation

Presentation was done without good eye contact, or simply read from notes. And, student did not explain the passive solar nature of the design.

Presentation was done without good eye contact, or simply read from notes. Or student did not explain the passive solar nature of the design.

Presentation of the model is done in a “professional manner” (good eye contact, voice projection, etc.). The passive solar aspects are clearly explained, including how the thermal mass would be incorporated into the home.

Presentation was professional, complete, and students were able to answer all questions about their design.

Passive Solar Design

The model does not include the passive solar elements of the design.

The model has some, but not all of the passive solar elements of the design.

The model includes the elements of the passive solar design

The model is made to showcase the passive solar elements. It clearly shows how the design takes advantage of solar energy.
