Marbles & Probability: 10 Trials

Marbles & Probability: 10 Trials

Introduction

You have been talking about probability with your teacher and class. Now is your chance to see how probability works by using a bag of marbles.

Directions:

  • Write the color of your marbles at the top of the chart.

  • For each color, record the number of times the color was selected in the 10 trials.

  • Then calculate the total number of picks and record that number in the Total column.

  • Next, calculate the results for each color based on your data.

  • Compare it to the theoretical probability of 1 in 3.

When finished, consider these questions:

  • Did your group follow each of the five steps carefully for each trial?

  • Do you believe your results are accurate?

  • How do your results compare with the theoretical probability of 1 in 3?

  • Are you surprised by your results? Why or why not?
