Greetings Science NetLinks Friends!
Happy New Year! The Science NetLinks team had a wonderful time off and hope that you did too. We are back and have classroom resources to help kick off a new year of science discovery.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 16, 2011 marks the 26th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. Honor the remarkable life and legacy of this pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement with your classroom using this collection of resources. Your students can explore the ways we have classified and defined race, confront stereotypes, and discuss segregation and integration.
Find additional resources dedicated to Dr. King from Thinkfinity.
National Reading Day
January 23 is National Reading Day, a literacy event designed to encourage Pre-K - 3rd grade students to develop a strong reading foundation. If you’re looking for a good book to incorporate into your classroom, check out this collection of lessons Science NetLinks has created using award-winning science books. Since 2006, we have used the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books winners as inspiration for lessons for all grade levels. Read about sibling relationships in the animal world, learn how microbes help humans, or become an amateur naturalist.
Black History Month
Celebrate Black History Month in your classroom this February with a collection of Science NetLinks resources that highlight the scientific work of African Americans and explore issues of race. Students can learn about the diversity of people working in the scientific community, understand the factors that determine skin color, and explore the careers of prominent African Americans in the STEM fields.
National Green Week
National Green Week kicks off February 6, 2012 and runs until Earth Day (April 22). Educators are encouraged to pick any week during this time to be their school's Green Week. Get your students involved by encouraging them to discuss environmental issues and what they can do to make a difference. Find lesson plans, activities, and participation challenges from the Green Education Foundation. For more ecology and environmental resources, check out our collection for Earth Day. Your class can learn about climate change, find ways to reduce trash, and explore renewable types of energy.
2012 AAAS Annual Meeting
Head to Vancouver, BC this February 16-20 to join Science NetLinks and a diverse group of leading scientists, engineers, policy-makers, and fellow educators at the 2012 AAAS Annual Meeting. Investigate “Flattening the World: Building the Global Knowledge Society” and find program tracks specifically targeted for education, including topics exploring research in STEM education, achievement gaps, and scientific literacy.
Meet scientists, get answers from experts, and participate in hands-on demonstrations during Family Science Days. This two-day event spotlights a variety of formal and informal science educators featuring interactive exhibits, stage shows, and much more, for FREE!
Join us in Vancouver to see what is shaping the future of science, math, and education.
