In this activity, you will investigate the new food guide to understand the importance of eating healthy foods and exercising regularly.

The Center for Nutrition Policy, an organization of the United States Department of Agriculture, reviewed and revised the food guide in 2011. The new MyPlate is a dietary guideline for Americans.

To learn more about this food guide, go to and read The Food Guide Pyramid Becomes a Plate from the KidsHealth website.

Now, go to ChooseMyPlate.gov to see an image of MyPlate. Examine the different colored sections used on the diet plate to show how much of a particular food group a person should eat each day. You can click on each food group to learn more about that particular group. Be ready to discuss this new food guide with your class.

Now you will research a particular food group that has been assigned to you by your teacher. To first get a brief explanation of the food guidelines, go to and read Steps to a Healthier You. Then go to Food Groups where you will see a list on the left-hand side of the page of the different food groups. Click on the food group you’ve been assigned to learn more about it.

Use the information you find in that section to answer the questions on your Food Group Question Sheet provided by your teacher. This sheet also will provide instructions on what parts of the food group you should investigate to find the answers.
