Happy Geek Pride Day!
Geek Pride Day is a celebration of all things geeky. (And let's face it, a love of science is pretty nerdy -- but in a good way!)
Geek Pride Day is celebrated annually on May 25 in honor of three geeky events:
- Star Wars, which debuted on this day in 1977
- Towel Day, which honors the life and work of environmentalist and science fiction author Douglas Adams
- Glorious 25 May, a holiday in Discworld, the fictional world of fantasy author Terry Pratchett
The term "geek," which grew out of an old German word meaning "fool," was redefined in its modern sense of meaning one who is especially enthusiastic about science, math, and technology in 1952 in a short story, "The Year of the Jackpot," by Robert Heinlein.
So, fellow geeks and nerds, we at Science NetLinks salute you. Whether you can recite pi to 50 places, know why 42 is significant, write poetry in Klingon, describe yourself as a code monkey, or know what wavelength your favorite color is, you're our kind of people. May the force be with you!
