Spotlight on Science Writers

Science NetLinks is pleased to announce a new series here on our blog: Spotlight on Science Writers.

A select group of authors who have won or been finalists for the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books have been invited to write or record an introduction to one of their books. We have suggested a few guidelines, but the format and content have been chosen by each author and will be appropriate for their book's intended audience. Science NetLinks will include related classroom resources appropriate for educators and students at the end of each Spotlight on Science Writers post.

Sponsored by Subaru and administered by the AAAS review journal SB&F Online, the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books are meant to reward and encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for all age groups. Established in 2005, the prize recognizes recently published works that are scientifically sound and foster an understanding and appreciation of science in young readers.

With a continued emphasis on nonfiction comprehension as part of the Common Core, it is our hope that this Spotlight on Science Writers (and the books it promotes) will catch students' attention and offer yet another way of engaging them in reading and science simultaneously by incorporating interesting, first-rate books into the science classroom.

Spotlight on Science Writers will begin later this week with a post by Terrie Williams on her book, The Voyage of KP2, and will continue for the next few months.
